Ellie Robinson makes leading 30
in Eat a Peach college tourney
Ellie Robinson from Middlesbrough, a freshman student at Georgia State University, shaved six shots off her first-round effort with a two-over-par 74 on the second day of the Eat a Peach Collegiate women's tournament at Idle Hour Golf Club, Macon in Georgia today.
Ellie, pictured, who reached the last eight of the British girls championship at Monifieth last year and the last 32 of the British women's open amateur championship at Harlech in June, improved from tied 47th overnight to a final position of joint 26th in the field of nearly 70 players.
Another freshman, Sammy Vass from Tain - one of the new girls at the University of Central Florida - had rounds of 86 and 84 for 170 to tie for 61st place. Sammy kept a double bogey off her card on the first day but had a triple bogey 8 at the long 15th today when she looked to have a sporting chance of breaking 80 in her second round in which she had a birdie at the long fourth.
Sammy's scores did not count for the UCF team of five. The head coach is taking the Scot on trips to play as an individual and gain experience of American playing conditions.
Marta Silva Zamora (Georgia) won the tournament with a pair of 70s (6,181yd, par-72 course) for 140, two shots ahead of Stefanie Kenoyer (Forman) with two 71s.
Georgia (590) just pipped Florida State (600) for the team title. UCF (608) finished sixth of 12 teams.
