Long-time leader Carly lets Faldo Under-21 title

slip out of her grasp over final round in Brazil

Comrie's Carly Booth had a nightmare final round of 12-over-par 84 to lose the lead she had held for two days and finish runner-up to English girls champion Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) in the Nick Faldo Series Grand Final at Itanhanga Golf Club, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 17-year-old Curtis Cup player from Perthshire had led 18-year-old Clyburn by two shots at the start of the final day but had a double bogey 6 at the second, and triple bogeys 8 and 7 at the long fifth and par-4 eighth holes respectively as she staggered to the turn in eight-over-par 44 strokes.
Clyburn, although not playing particularly well, nor feeling all that great as she bothered to distraction by mosquito bites, turned in 41 shots to take over a one-shot lead from the Scot.
Things did not get much better for Booth after the turn. She had a double bogey 7 at the 11th and a double bogey 6 at the 12th. A birdie 2 at the short 17th was too little too late to turn the tide.
Clyburn, 18, from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, finished with rounds of 79, 70 and 80 for a 13-over-par total of 229 to win the Under-21 girls' championship by two shots from Booth who had scores of 77, 70 and 84.
Former English women's amateur champion Hannah Barwood (Knowle) was third on 233 with scores of 78, 74 and 81
Fifteen-year-old Brogan Townend (Pleasington) from Blackburn won the Girls' Under-16 classification with a creditable total of 232, five ahead of England girl international Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) and Brazil's Vitoria Teixeira, the second-round leader.

Brogan's closing score of 74 was several shots better than that achieved by the older, more experienced Clyburn and Booth.

Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) had rounds of 77, 73 and 71 for a five-over-par total of 221 which gave him sixth place in the boys' Under-21 championship behind Brazil's Pedro Costa Lima (76-70-68) and England's Thomas Shadbolt (Mid Herts) (75-70-69) who both finished on two-under-par 214.

Costa Lima's better last-round of 68 - the best score by anyone on the final muggy day - was the tie-breaker.
Scott Young (Turnhouse) finished 14th in the Boys' Under-18 category with scores of 75, 79 and 76 for 230, 18 shots more than England's Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath) who scored 70, 69 and 73 for a title-winning 212, the best 54-hole aggregate in any category.
Watched by Nick Faldo, who was closely following the close of his 13th Grand Final, the 18 year-old Bell from London led from the first round. He contended well with the hot, humid conditions.
Bell commented: “It’s been a wonderful event: having Nick here has made it a very special week for me; I’ve loved every minute. Being in Brazil has been a totally different experience for me – the people, the surroundings, the culture – it’s all been great. Having a man of Nick’s calibre here to take clinics and learn from makes this a very different tournament.”
Oliver Carr (Heswall), 16, from Prenton won the Boys' Under-16 category by five strokes.
