SCOT TIES FOR FOURTH PLACE

Sally Watson chasing U S victory has

a triple bogey 6 at second last hole

Sally Watson, a freshman student at Stanford University, California, finished joint fourth in the prestigious Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational women's college golf tournament at Sahalee Country Club, Washington State.
The teenage Curtis Cup player, pictured, whose family home is now at Elie in Fife, was challenging strongly for the lead in the final round when she crashed to a triple bogey 6 at the short 17th.
Watson finished with rounds of 77, 72 and 74 for a total of 223 over the testing par 72 course.
In her final round she birdied the sixth, 10th and 13th but bogeyed the eighth and ninth and had that triple at the 17th.
Over the 54 holes the Scot had nine birdies but she also had three triple bogeys in all - two of them in the first round at par 4 holes.
Had she been able to eliminate the double bogeys, she would have scored her first win on the US college circuit. As it was she was the leading Stanford team player in only her second event.
Katrina Delen Briones (San Jose State University) won the individual honours with scores of 73, 75 and 71 for a three-over-par total of 219.
Runner-up, beaten by a shot was English girl, Natasha Podmore, a senior student at San Francisco University, from Appleton and a member of Delamere Forest Golf Club.
Natasha, 22, had rounds of 72, 76 and 72. She birdied the fifth, eighth and 11th and bogeyed the third, fourth and 12th in her final round. Beaten by only one stroke in the end, Podmore will be rueing the double bogey 6 at the eighth in her second round.
Roseanne Niven from Crieff, a senior year student at the University of California Berkeley, found form in her final round helping the Bears to win the team event by 15 strokes from Stanford.
Roseanne finished tied for 24th place on 234 with scores of 80, 82 and 71. She birdied the first, 13th and 14th on the last day when she also bogeyed the third, 16th and 18th.
California (897) won the team event ahead of Stanford (912) with Pepperdine (917) third in the 13-team event.
