James Byrne will fly the Scottish flag in Dean Robertson's European team for the defence of the Palmer Cup against the United States on June 24-26 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
The Banchory youngster, pictured right, a student at Arizona State University and a member of GB&I's Walker Cup elite training squad, has been named in an eight-man side of leading college golfers for the Ryder Cup-style joust.
England's Patrick Spraggs, a student at the University of Stirling, gained his place as a reward for winning the men's title at the R&A Scholars' tournament at St Andrews recently.
The European team is:
Patrick Spraggs (England) Stirling University
Andrea Pavan (Italy) Texas A & M
Henrik Norlander (Sweden) Augusta State
Jesper Kennegard (Sweden) Arizona State
James Byrne (Scotland) Arizona State
David Lingmerth (Sweden) Arkansas
Pontus Widegren (Sweden) UCLA
Rhys Enoch (Wales) East Tennessee
Dean Robertson (Head Coach)
Walle Danewid (Assistant Coach) (Swedish Golf Federation)
"The American side we beat last year at Cherry Hills went on to form the backborn of their successful Walker Cup team," said coach Robertson. "That shows how impressive our win was. But we have another strong team this year with plenty of experience. James Byrne excelled on the amateur circuit last year and is used to the international team stage."
+James Byrne and Ross Kellett (Colville Park) travel to India next week to represent Europe against Asia Pacific in the Bonallack Trophy match from April 21 to 23.
