JANE TURNER RETAINS BRITISH STUDENT
-
WOMEN'S STROKE-PLAY GOLF TITLE

Aberdeen student Jane Turner has won the British Universities & Colleges' women's stroke-play golf championship for the second year in a row.
A full Scotland international team player, Jane, who is a second year graphic design student at Robert Gordon University and a member of Craigielaw Golf Club, had rounds of 76, 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 299 over a demanding Dundonald Links women's course which had a CSS of 76-76-75-76 (303).
Turner won the title at Hollinwell, Notts 12 months ago.
One shot behind the pacemaking Sian James (Birmingham) overnight, Jane moved into the lead for the first time when she birdied the dogleg 17th hole with a pitch-and-a-putt in the final round.
Turner is now hoping to pull off what would be a superb title double on Ayrshire links. Next weekend she is in the star-studded international field for the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
"The Ayrshire coast is great for me. I have improved every game this season and hope that this sets me up for what is to come this season," she said.
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga, Spain, in early June.
Turner finished a shot ahead of Lucy Williams (Birmingham) (80-73-73-74) with Sian James (Birmingham) third on 301 with rounds of 75, 75, 73 and 78.
Monifieth's Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) finished a creditable fourth on 312 with scores of 80, 76, 74 an d82.
Ladybank member Susan Jackson (Edinburgh) finished joint sixth on 319 with scores of 85, 80, 78 and 76.
The British universities men's stroke-play title for the Wollaton Park Trophy was won by Nicky Maddison (University of Northumbria) who was playing on the American college circuit at this time last year.
Maddison, who gave his leading rivals a start with a first-round 79, came roaring back into contention with scores of 69, 70 and 72 for a total of two-over-par 290 to win by three shots from Northumbrian team-mate Ross Crowe.
Nicky, a first year computer studies student from Newcastle, joined the University of Northumbria last September, having previously studied at Hutchinson Community College, in Kansas City where he was their star golfer.
A member of Newcastle Golf Club with a handicap of +1, Nicky felt that the best representing the part of his 72 holes was his his ability to recover from a "disappointing" 79 on the first day to shoot "very solid golf" for the remaining three rounds.
Previously, St Andrews boys' open champion in 2008, Nicky said:
"Scotland's pretty lucky for me. I am really very happy with this result". Asked what his ambitions were for the rest of the season, Nicky said "I intend to practise hard and see where I go."
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga.
Top Scottish-based student was England's Patrick Spraggs (Stirling University), recent winner of the R&A Scholars' men's title at St Andrews. Patrick finished fifth on 295 with scores of 72, 81, 780 and 72. He finished two shots ahead of the leading Scot, Aberdeen's John Duff who came sixth on 297 with scores of 74, 75, 74 and 74.
