Leona Maguire v Mary Dowling in Irish final

Last year Mary Dowling (New Ross) lost to Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) in the 18-hole final of the Lancome Irish women’s (closed) amateur championship.
Tomorrow, in the final of this year’s championship at Portstewart Golf Club, Mary will be faced by 15-year-old Lisa’s twin sister, Leona Maguire.
Maura Diamond (Royal Portrush), conqueror of defending champion Lisa Maguire by 2 and 1 in the morning quarter-finals, lost by 2 and 1 to Mary Dowling in the semi-finals.
Leona Maguire beat Louise Coffey (Malone) by 3 and 1 in the semi-finals after being all square on the 15th tee. Leona won the 15th with a birdie, the 16th with another birdie and the 17th a par.
Mary Dowling will be looking for her first Lancome Irish title. She is in great form this season with the Cork Scratch Cup already under her belt and she was also runner-up in the Munster Championship.
Jessica Carty (Holywood) won the the Ita Wallace Trophy (Plate) by defeating Sarah Helly (Enniscrone) in the final.
Sarah started well and won the first two holes but Jessica levelled the match with pars at the third and fourth and went one up with a birdie at the fifth. At the half way stage the match was level again but Jessica then went two up through 12. She had a one over score on the back nine and won on the 18th by two holes.
