LORETTO GIRL RUNNER-UP
-
IN GERMAN WOMEN'S

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Loretto Golf Academy's 14-year-old pupil Julie Yang lost a one-stroke lead over the final round to finish one-shot behind the winner, French ace Lucie Andre, in the German women's open amateur golf championship at Dusseldorf Golf Club today.
South Korean-born Julie, pictured above, was the youngest-ever winner of the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Southerdown the previous weekend and she had seemed on her way to another momentous victory after rounds of 73, 70 and 67 had her leading a field packed with Continental amateur stars through the first 54 holes.
But, having amassed 11 birdies in her first three rounds, Julie, whose parents brought her over from Phoenix, Arizona to enrol at the Musselburgh establishment last September, could not notch a single sub-par figure over her final 18 holes. She had 17 pars and a bogey at the par-4 14th in closing with a one-over-par 72 for a two-under-par total of 282.
Andre, top-ranked female amateur by the European Golf Association last year, had scores of 73, 72, 66 and 70 for a winning total of 281.
Charley Hull, 14-year-old Kettering prodigy and winner of The Leveret Trophy and Hampshire Rose women's open tournaments alread this season, was in third place with a round to go but finished joint fifth on 289 after rounds of 73, 73, 70 and 73. She had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th in her closing round after a double bogey 7 at the long third in her second round.
Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin finished joint 58th in the field of 64 with scores of 77, 75, 83 and 74.
