Slovak Open hit by stormy weather, first round suspended

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
The first round of the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open has been suspended until 6.30am on Friday, due to a persistent electrical storm at Gray Bear Golf Course at Tále ski, golf and hotel resort.
First round play was halted at 2.45pm local time, when the sun was still shining but lightning was detected within the vicinity of the mountain valley and the skies quickly darkened, leading to a thunderstorm and heavy rain.
The second round of the four-round tournament is now scheduled to commence at 10.30am on Friday subject to the weather, with the last tee time at 4.30pm. The organisers aim to finish the second round by 9pm Friday.
Sweden’s Linda Wessberg started at 8.40am and grabbed the early lead with a four-under-par 68, played in fine conditions. The 29-year-old carded four birdies over the back nine, at the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes. She then played the front nine in even par 35 after a birdie at the second and a bogey at the fifth.
Wessberg, a three-time winner on the LET, led at halfway during the UniCredit Ladies German Open a fortnight ago and went on to tie for fifth place.
Having grown up in Gothenburg on the coast of Sweden she enjoys the challenge posed by difficult conditions and Gray Bear is playing fairly long this week after heavy rain over the past two weeks. On closely-mown areas, preferred lies are in place.
England’s Laura Davies, twice a winner on Tour this year, fired a 70 and is two shots off the pace. She played the back nine in one-under but missed a fantastic eagle opportunity from three feet on the tricky 18th green, having played a spectacular iron shot in. She also played the front nine in one-under with three birdies and two bogeys.
Helen Alfredsson, who is from Gothenburg, like Wessberg, played the back nine in two-under-par but played the front nine in one over 36, for a round of 71.
Spain’s Emma Cabrera-Bello and Marta Prieto also finished at one-under along with Frenchwoman Jade Schaeffer.
K M Juul from Denmark was at two-under through six holes with Germany’s Anja Monke, the 2010 Lalla Meryem Cup champion, at two-under after two birdies in her first three holes, when play was suspended. Slovakia’s sole professional in the field, Zuzana Kamasova, was at one-under after three holes along with Melissa Reid and Wales’ Breanne Loucks.
Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire matched the par of 72 with four birdiues, at the short second, the long 11th, the 13th and the long 15th.
