Rhys Enoch leading British student at end of Day 1 in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Bogeys drag down James Byrne in first
round of NCAA Championships
Scotland international James Byrne from Banchory, a student at Arizona State University, was lying joint 65th in a field of 156 players at the end of the first day of the NCAA Championships, the climax to the American men's college golf season, over the Honors Course, Chattanooga in Tennessee.
Byrne returned a 74 with birdies at the long 11th and short 16th after he started at the 10th over a long course of some 7,395yd.
The 2011 Walker Cup team candidate dropped too many shots - at the 10th, second, fourth and fifth - to get closer to Arizona State team-mate Jesper Kennegard who shared the overnight lead with another player from Sweden, Henrik Norlander (Augusta State).
Leading British player at the end of the first round was Welsh international Rhys Enoch (East Tennessee State), pictured, with a par-matching 72 which put him in joint 36th position.
Enoch, whose brother Ben was tragically killed in a car accident on his way to the 2009 Lytham Trophy, could have been a lot better. He had a double bogey 5 at the short 16th which detracted from his bag of five birdies.
Garrick Porteous (Tennessee) from Bamburgh Castle was joint 52nd on 73 but team-mate Darren Renwick from Woking, Surrey had a nightmare, birdie-less 82 to shared 152nd place.
