HOW IT WENT IN THE MORNING FIRST ROUND
KELSEY AND LAURA WIN BUT PAMELA AND
JANE KO'd IN FIRST ROUND AT GANTON
Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald and St Rule Trophy winner Laura Murray are through to the last 32 of the British women’s open amateur golf championship at a windy Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire today.
But two other Scots, Curtis Cup player Pamela Pretswell and Robert Gordon University studlent Jane Turner were beaten.
Pretswell shot four birdies but still lost narrowly on the last green to Spanish ace Carlota Ciganda.
Kelsey, a Stirling student and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club member, was a 3 and 2 winner over Germany’s Pia Halbig, who has played on the US women’s college circuit.
Kelsey, never behind, was one up after four holes and two up after 11. She went three up after 14 and clinched the match on the 16th green.
Kelsey now plays Ciganda who won this title three years ago but lost in the final at Harlech last year.
Pretswell was two up on Ciganda after eight holes but the Spaniard hit a purple patch to turn that around and lead by two holes on the 13th tee.
Ciganda finally knocked out the Scot by holing a 30ft putt at the last for a one-hole victory after a great match.
Alford’s Laura Murray was all square at the turn against Camilla Hedberg, the No 4 seed from Spain but had fallen one down after 11 holes. In the tighest of finishes, there was never more than a hole in it either way before Laura won on the 18th.
Robert Gordon University student Jane Turner (Craigielaw) lost the first four holes to Spain’s Anna Aresse who had increased her lead to six holes after eight. Turner eventually lost by 7 and 6.
Sally Watson made it four Scots in the second round with a very good 6 and 5 win over Pleasington’s Nikki Foster who has figured prominently in several big open tournaments earlier this season. Sally won by 6 and 5.
Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, the No 1 seed, was four down after five holes to the No 64 qualifier, Woburn’s Nicole Whitmore, but rallied to win at the 18th where the English girl conceded the match and a one-hole victory when she was in trouble in the trees off the team GB and I Curtis Cup players Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) won their first ties by 2 an 1 and 6 and 5 respectively.
Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) looked to have the measure of twice British girls championship finalist Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) when she either all square or one or two holes up for most of the match. But the English teenager finished the better to make up the leeway and win on the 18th green.
