Meghan is top of the class in English schools’ championship
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Northamptonshire’s Meghan MacLaren stormed home to win the English schools’ championship by one shot at John O’Gaunt, Bedfordshire.
The 16-year-old played the final nine of the 36-hole tournament in five-under par and returned a second round score of two-under 72.
Meghan, pictured below by Cal Carson Golf Agency,  added it to her opening 76 for a narrow victory over Staffordshire’s Bronwyn Davies, who had shared the first round lead after carding a level par 74.
In third place was 12-year-old Alice Hewson from Hertfordshire who was four over for the day and whose score included a hole-in-one on the 135 yard 16th where she used a seven-iron. She had one other eagle and seven birdies during the championship
Norfolk players Rebecca Heeles and Amber Ratcliffe filled the next two places, followed by Yorkshire’s Ellie Goodall.
The six girls – all members of EWGA training squads - will represent England schools in the annual international against Scotland at Fairhaven in September. Meghan MacLaren, Bronwyn Davies and Hampshire’s Georgina Mundy will play against Wales schools at St Pierre in August. They will be joined by one more girl from the English U16 schools’ championship which takes place next month.
Meghan also has a date at County Finals in September. Last week she helped Northamptonshire win the Midlands South regional County Match Week and reach the finals of the English Counties’ Championship.
