NCAA DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Late blow knocks back James Byrne in Tennessee
A double bogey 5 at the short 16th knocked Banchory’s James Byrne (Arizona State) back into a tie for 56th place in the NCAA Division 1 golf championships over the Honors Course, Chattanooga in Tennessee.
Byrne had improved his situation with birdies at the fifth, 11th and short 14th before missing the green with his tee shot at the 16th and taking four more shots to hole out.
It was a bad day for the Arizona State team who must finish the 72-hole stroke play part of the championship in the top eight to qualify for the match-play stages. They have dropped to a share of ninth place but only one shot behind the eighth-placed Clemson and Washington.
Byrne’s team-mate Jesper Kennegard from Sweden plummeted out of the overnight lead with a 77 (40-37) for 145 – 10 shots behind the new leader, Alex Ching (San Diego) who has scored 69-66 for a nine-under-par tally of 135 over the demanding 7,395yd course.
Garrick Porteous (Tennessee) from Bamburgh Castle was the leading British player with scores of 73 and 70 for 143.
Welsh international Rhys Enoch (East Tennessee State), after a first-round 72, slipped back with a 74 for 146.
Team-mate Darren Renwick from Woking was almost last in the field of 156 players with scores of 82 and 77 for 159.
