Roz Adams leads by one in English senior strokeplay championship
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Roz Adams holds a one-shot lead with one round to play in the English senior women’s strokeplay championship at Stockport, Cheshire.
The top of the scoreboard is packed with leading players and Roz is predicting a tight finish before the title is decided tomorrow. “I think there’s going to be a bit of a rush at the end – stand beside the last two holes and watch who finishes strongly!”
Roz is a noted stroke-player. She has led this event before and on more than one occasion has been top qualifier at the English senior championship.
This time she holds a slender one-shot advantage over former champions Sue Dye of Cheshire and Janet Melville of Nottinghamshire and her Surrey colleague Felicity Christine. A further stroke behind is English senior champion Caroline Marron, also of Cheshire.
The key to success, says Roz, will be the putting. “The greens here are very good but very difficult to read – everyone says the same. Today I started to read them a bit better and, having now played the course for two days, I’m hoping that if I can get the putting sorted tomorrow I will have a good score.”
Today she added 76 to her opening 77 and described her play as steady, marred only by three dropped shots in the last two holes.
“This course is brilliant, it’s superb, and the set-up is just right to make you think your way round.”
Other players echoed Roz’s words about the putting. First-round leader Janet Melville missed a short putt early on and felt she struggled on the greens for the rest of the round.
Caroline Marron, who declared she made a slightly nervy start, added: “I found the greens trickier today.” She also noted that in today’s warm sunny conditions the course was changing as it dried out.
The low score of the day was 76, five over par, and Roz was matched by Judy Butler of Yorkshire and Barbara Laird of Cheshire.
The top half of the field, plus ties, go forward to play tomorrow’s final round of the championship.
