Boyd Quaich international event tees off at St Andrews
TITLE-HOLDER STEVENSON SETS
FAST PACE IN STUDENTS' "OPEN"
Defending champion Gordon Stevenson (St Andrews) made a great start in his bid to repeat last year's victory in the Boyd Quaich international students' golf tournament at St Andrews today.
He shot a five-under-par 67 over the Old Course, not off the Open championship tees but still an excellent score in weather that was a stunning as it was disappointing during last week's Major.
It's not yet at the "Family at War" stage but interesting that John Wybar (Aberdeen University), currently lying three shots behind on 70, is a cousin of Gordon Stevenson.
Stevenson, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency, will play his second round over the New Course tomorrow morning as the players switch courses to complete 36 holes at the end of which the top 30 will go out again later on Wednesday afternoon with the final round on Thursday morning.
With so many visitors playing the St Andrews courses in the aftermath of the Open championship, the pace of play was painfully slow.
Leading scores:
OLD COURSE (Par 72)
67 Gordon Stevenson (St Andrews)
68 Chris O'Neill (Wales Newport), John Owens (Ulster)
69 Karl Osche (Stellenbosch)
70 John Wybar (Aberdeen), Steven Smith (Heriot-Watt)
71 Sean Morrison (Francis Marion), Gerard Kelly (University College Dublin), Graeme McDougall (Strathclyde)
NEW COURSE (Par 72)
69 Andrew Heesom (Leeds)
71 Gareth Rees (Cardiff)
72 Chris Young (Exeter), Michael Becker (Germany), Clark Nelson (Clayton State University, USA), Alex Main (Edinburgh)
73 Colm Kenny (University College Dublin)
