ANGUS HAVE STRENGTH IN NUMBERS IN NORTH
OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH-PLAY
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
New North Division county team champions Angus, the organising county, have got the taste of success - and are looking for more! They look odds on to provide the winner of the North of Scotland women’s amateur golf championship, restricted to players from Aberdeenshire, Angus, Northern Counties and Perth & Kinross, at the end of this week’s three-day programme at Forfar Golf Club.
The four top qualifiers for the match-play stages after a quite windy day at a short but tricky course were all from Angus clubs – Andrea Bowie (Monifieth), Ann Ramsay (Kirrmeuir), pictured left above, Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), pictured right above, and Jackie Brown (Monifieth) – and of the 16 who go forward, 11 are members of Angus clubs..
Andrea Bowie and Ann Ramsay both matched the par of 72 with the No 1 seed tag going to Bowie by virtue of having the better inward half, 35 to 38.
Bowie birdied the second, 12th 14th and short 16th, dropping two shots at the par-4 last hole and one apiece at the third and fourth. Andrea, who has a handicap of five, had the best net score of 67, followed by Anne Chree (Ladies Panmure Monifieth) (7) and Ailsa Summers (3) on the net 70 mark.
Ramsay, Angus champion in 2000 and 2001, birdied the second, seventh, short ninth and 12th. She bogeyed the eighth, 10th, 11th and 18th.
The limit mark for scratch qualifiers was 80 - and there was room for only one of the three on that mark. On a card countback, Jemma Chalmers (Monifieth) got the 16th place in the draw while Katie Reid (Monifieth) and Ann Hay (Edzell) were eliminated from the scratch section but qualified to play in the handicap championship for the Angus Salver.
The Gifford Trophy scratch match-play qualifiers included mother and daughter Mary and Ailsa Summers. Ailsa was the No 3 qualifier with a 73, Mary No 12 with a 78, which puts them in opposite halves of the draw, so they won’t meet unless it is in Wednesday afternoon’s final.
Ailsa had birdies at three long holes, the fourth, seventh and 12th and also the 18th. but she had a double bogey 6 at the 16th and bogeys at the fifth, 14th and 15th in halves of 35 and 38.
Out to resist the "Angus Army" are past Scotland international Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) (77), runner-up to Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie) at Newmachar 12 months ago, Scottish schoolgirls runner-up recently Hannah McCook (Abernethy) (78), Megan Clyne (Deeside) (78), US college circuit player Sammy Vass (Tain) (79) and Rachel Polson (Peterculter)) (79).
Cruden Bay's Lynne Terry, Finance Director of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, would have qualified with her score of 79 but she has a meeting in Birmingham tomorrow and had to give that priority over playing in the match-play stages.
