Defending champions Irish girls qualify in second place
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Teenage twins Leona and Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) tied second in the individual rankings to see Ireland qualify second in their Gold medal defence at the European Under-18 girls' team championship at Aalborg, Denmark, 6-10 July 2010.
Lisa fired a marvellous three under par best-of-the-day 68 with birdies on three, nine, 12, 13, 17 and 18 to nudge home ahead of her twin sister Leona by just one stroke. Leona’s 69 saw her birdie three, seven, nine, seventeen and eighteen and both finished two shots behind French sensation Celine Boutier.
With three scores to count from four, Stephanie Meadow added a solid four over par 75 to see the Irish comfortably secure second place while Laura McCarthy improved by three strokes with her closing 78.
Ireland now face home nation Denmark in the quarter finals while top seeds France play Finland. The semi finals conclude Friday with the Champions crowned on Saturday afternoon.
