England's girls on a high on opening day of Euro Young Masters

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England’s girls are flying high after the first round of the European Young Masters at Royal Balaton, Hungary – despite experiencing the ups and downs of tournament golf, with a hole-in-one thrown in for good measure!
Dorset’s Georgia Hall was the low scorer of the mixed England team with an excellent one-over par 73, which included three consecutive birdies on the front nine. She is lying third in the girls’ individual table.
Cheshire’s Bronte Law (Bramhall), meanwhile, fell foul of a communications mix-up about a local rule – but also scored that hole-in-one on her way to a 78.
At the captains’ meeting the day before play began it was announced that distance markers were movable obstructions and players were advised accordingly. But, when local rules were distributed the next day the markers were identified as immovable.
On the 13th hole, Bronte removed the 150-metre marker in order to play her shot, believing she was within her rights, and promptly incurred a two-shot penalty and a double bogey.
However, far from being rattled she parred the next and then had a hole-in-one on the short 15th, where she used a seven-iron for her shot over a quarry to the green. Still unphased, she parred in and is in the girls’ top ten.
Alex Marshall, the girls’ manager, said: “It was very good to come back from a two-shot penalty with a hole-in-one and I think it softened the blow a little.
“Both girls are playing good golf. Georgia was really solid and putted very well – the greens on this course are pretty tough and it’s all about short game and putting.
“It’s also very hot, 33 deg F today and it’s supposed to get hotter. There’s no breeze, just sun, and everyone is finding it pretty tough, even those who are used to high temperatures.”
The England team is completed by Matthew Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire), who scored 74 and Max Orrin (North Foreland) who shot 75. England are currently lying fourth in the Nations Cup table, behind Sweden, Norway and France.
