Japan's Mika Miyazato leads at nine under par after the second round of the Evian Masters presented by Société Générale with host nation player, Gwladys Nocera,in second place one stroke behind.
Miyazato returned a five under 67 on a weather interrupted day at Evian Masters Golf Club, France
The 20-year-old from Okinawa, who is no relation to the World No.1 Ai Miyazato, mixed six birdies with one bogey on a wet golf course.
She opened with a 68 but was out in 33 after four birdies and one bogey on the front nine, coming home in 34 with further birdies on the 11th and 18th holes.
Having played through two weather delays, the first at 11.30am for 25 minutes and the second at 3.26pm for an hour and 40 minutes, Miyazato explained that supreme concentration allowed her to maintain her momentum through the stoppages.
“I was very, very focused today,” said the 20-year-old, who is targeting her maiden professional victory at the $3.25 million event. “In the beginning, the first nine, my driver wasn't as steady, but with the rain delay, I was able to refresh my mindset and have a good back nine.”
Nocera, the European No.1 in 2008, carded a 67 which contained five birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.
She was tied for the lead after nailing a 12 foot birdie putt at the par three 17th-hole but dropped a shot at the par-five 18th after hitting her third shot into thick rough by the green.
Nocera, who has won 10 times on the Ladies European Tour since 2006, has not finished better than equal 41st in her five previous appearances at Evian but she explained that she had a more relaxed approach this year.
“I got invite from the sponsors of the tournament, so, you know, I decided, and I told my coach, my caddie, my mental coach, and myself, that I will leave 18 every day with a smile, and I will smile on the course. That was the whole point, and I'm doing all right now and I need to keep on going. This is such a great event, and I'm so lucky to be part of it. You know, you have, at some point, to enjoy it, otherwise it's a waste.”
The 2005 Ricoh Women’s British Open champion Jeong Jang finished a stroke further behind in third and was one of eight South Korean players in the top 12 places, with six players in the top 20 from Japan.
The 2009 champion Ai Miyazato had a second round of 72 to tie for 16th position at three under par.
England's Melissa Reid, who held a three-way share of the lead after an opening round of 66, shot 77 and finished eight shots off the pace.
Current European No.1 Laura Davies, pictured above, placed last after an opening round of 81, improved with a 68 but missed the cut by two and will now head to the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale for the final Major of the year.
