International field for English stroke-play championship
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild will defend the English open strokeplay championship against an international field at Whittington Heath Golf Club, Staffordshire next week (Tuesday to Thursday, August 3-5).
The 72-hole event has attracted an excellent entry which includes the 15-year-old Korean star, Julie Yang, who already holds the Welsh open stroke-play title. Julie, who is based in Scotland, plays off plus-three and has qualified for this week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open.
Meanwhile, Scottish ladies’ and U21 champion Kelsey MacDonald leads a contingent of four other players from north of the border. Joining her are former Scottish champion Megan Briggs, international Jane Turner and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin. International Aedin Murphy is one of three Irish players while the Welsh group includes international Gemma Bradbury.
There are four Staffordshire players in the championship, among them Sam Birks (Wolstanton) who is another Welsh international. Others from the county are Bronwyn Davies (Trentham), Melissa Siviter (Enville) and Sue Spencer from the host club.
Last year, England internationals Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts) and Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton) staged an exciting last-round challenge to Charlotte Wild (Mere), who made a great birdie on the last to win the title. Both are back in the field this season and can be counted on to be strong contenders. Hannah is also now the Irish stroke-play champion.
Among the other high-profile players in the field are Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall), the 2009 English champion; Sian James (Bristol and Clifton), the new English mid-amateur champion; teenage international Nikki Foster (Pleasington); Tara Watters (Muswell Hill), the runner-up in the last two English championships; and 14-year-old Charley Hull (Woburn) who has won two top scratch events this season.
The championship has attracted a full field of 120 players. All competitors will play 18 holes on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, 3rd and 4th August. The top 36 players and ties will qualify for a further two rounds on Thursday, 5 August.
