Lesley Atkins wins Scottish girls' championship at Eyemouth
Lesley Atkins, 15-year-old Gullane Ladies junior member and Loretto School, Musselburgh pupil, is the new Scottish Under-18 girls' (closed) champion.
The No 7 seed beat Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe), 25th of the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages, by 5 and 4 in the final at Eyemouth Golf Club today.
The high winds of earlier in the week had subsided and Lesley, the youngest ever Borders women's county champion when she was a member at Minto Golf Club, was level par for the 14 holes played.
Kate, who had beaten the eighth, ninth, first and fourth seeds to reach the final, was roughly four over par at the finish. She led briefly after a birdie 4 at the first but Atkins squared the match with an up-and-down par at the second and went ahead to stay by holing a 25ft putt for a birdie 2 at the short third.
Lesley doubled her lead even with a bogey 5 at the eighth and was two up at the turn.
The Gullane player, Scottish Under-14 girls' champion in 2008, wrapped up her second national title with a winning par at the 11th followed by back-to-back birdies at the 13th, holing from 25ft, and 14th, holing from seven feet.
Result of final:Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) bt Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) 5 and 4.
