R and A Junior Open
Emily leads girls by two shots with a late, late 70 at Lundin
Emily Taylor, 15 year old Royal Lytham player, the last competitor in a field of 122 to finish at 8.22pm, after a round of 5hr 22min, took a two-stroke lead with a one-under-par 70 in the girls' category on the opening day of the RandA Junior Open over Lundin Golf Club's links course in Fife.
Emily's 70 started with a bogey 5 at the first and another bogey 5 at the fourth but she settled down after that. Using mainly a rescue wood off the tee to make sure she hit the fairways and with the bounce on the hard fairways she did not lose much distance in doing that.
She felt that "good driving" had been the key to her round.
She birdied the par-4 eighth and par-4 ninth to turn in level par 36.
Four solid pars to start the inward journey and then a birdie 2 at the short 14th and a birdie 3 at the par 5 16th.
Although there is no separate category for girls' alone, it is worth commenting that Emily's score was two shots better than the next best by a female competitor- a pair of 72s from 15-year-old Cecilia Cho, the New Zealander who won the Australian WOMEN'S open amateur stroke-play championship earlier this year and who has a handicap of plus five, and Korean Hyo-Joo Kim, a 14-year-old one-handicapper.
Emily Taylor looked set to join 14-year-old Danish player Daniel Nielsen - who had never played a round on a links course previously (no practice round, he flew in to Edinburgh from the European boys team championship in Turkey at 6pm on Sunday night) ... on the 69 mark but then took a 5 at the difficult par-4 closing hole which has a long narrow green hard up against an out of bounds on the left.
Ewan Scott from St Andrews is right in the picture with a round of 70 which included a double bogey 6 at the fourth after he selected the wrong club for his approach and one thing led to another. A birdie 2 at the short fifth cheered him up and though he bogeyed the sixth he then had a very good four-under-par run in which he birdied the long ninth, long 13th, 15th and 16th before he three-putted the 18th from 60ft - leaving his approach well short of the flag. No doubt about it, that second shot to the 18th green is just about the most difficult to judge on the whole course.
"I holed a few putts but I was disappointed to take three putts at the last," said Scott.
Scotland's other representative, Angus girls and women's champion Ailsa Summers had an 84 which included triple bogey 7s at the seventh and 15th in halves of 43 and 41. Now if Ailsa can just par these two holes in the second round, that will be a six-shot improvement over two holes!
