Sally Watson (and dad) play in US

Women's Open this week

Sally Watson takes on the world's best women golfers this week in the US Women's Open and will also be inside the ropes next week, when their male counterparts tee it up at St Andrews in the Open Championship.
"As soon as I get home from Oakmont, I am due to carry a scoreboard at St Andrews, so it will be great to see the world's best men golfers at close quarters so soon after my US Open experience," said the 18-year-old.
First, Watson is hoping to see her own name on scoreboards. The Stanford University, California student is one of 28 amateurs in the field at Oakmont, where Angel Cabrera won the men's US Open three years ago. This is the Scot's fourth professional event and her second major, having produced a splendid performance when she tied for 50th behind Lorena Ochoa when the Mexican won the Ricoh Women's British Open at St Andrews in 2007.
"This will be the biggest event I have played in; the USGA expects about 125,000 spectators during the week and worldwide TV coverage," Watson told "The Scotsman" before heading for Pittsburgh.
"Oakmont has hosted more USGA events than any other course and, from what I had seen on the web, the course looks fantastic - challenging but fair. I am sure the USGA will have set it up to test all aspects of our game. There is one 250-yard par-3 and the greens are supposed to roll at 14 on the stimpmeter."
Watson, who is also hoping to qualify again for the Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale at the end of the month, added: "I am excited that my coach from the Leadbetter Academy, Kevin Collins, who will be with me at Oakmont, has managed to set up a practice round for me on Tuesday with Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel. I am sure I will learn a great deal from watching them play the course and navigate their way around the various challenges.
"I am also looking forward to catching up with the other Scots in the field and to sharing some of my Stanford experiences with Mhairi McKay (who attended the Californian college at the same time as Tiger Woods) in particular."
Given the last US Women's Open at Oakmont, in 1992, was won by Patty Sheehan with a level-par total, Watson, who will have dad, Graham, caddying for her, reckons the recent British women's amateur championship at Ganton was a perfect dress rehearsal.
"I played well at the British Amateur, especially in the stroke-play, and lost on the 18th to Kelly Tidy (the eventual winner], who played really well all week and thoroughly deserved her title," said the Elie and Earlsferry Ladies member.
"I felt that my long game stood up very well to the tough test which Ganton provides off the tee. So, hopefully, I can put all aspects of my game together at Oakmont, and play solid percentage golf, especially on approaches to the green, which is the key to scoring.
"I plan on staying patient and I know that with my dad on the bag we will play smart golf."
