Sheena McElroy is new Irish seniors championship
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Sheena McElroy (Grange) was crowned Irish Seniors Champion after a crushing defeat by 7 and 6 of debutante Niamh Giblin (Dun Laoghaire) at Tullamore Golf Club today.
McElroy got off to a flying start with a birdie at the first and stood three up through four holes as Giblin struggled to repeat the form that saw her record impressive victories in previous rounds. The turning point transpired at the long seventh where McElroy found water on her approach. Giblin, who looked like reducing the deficit, cleared the green with her approach only to finish out of bounds and the gap widened to five holes.
McElroy went on to increase the gap to six holes with a solid par on the short ninth and when Giblin failed to make inroads on the deficit, McElroy comfortably ended the affair on the 12th green.
Earlier in the day, McElroy (Grange) holed from ten feet for birdie on the ninth to turn three up on her way to victory over a luckless Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) in the second semi-final. Giblin had earlier put an end to Valerie Hassett's (Ennis) excellent run this week hitting almost every fairway on the outward nine and holing out solidly on the greens to close out her match on 14.
McElroy will now lead the Irish Seniors Team at the European Senior Team Championships in Berlin in August having captured her second Irish Seniors Close title in three years.
Today's results:
SEMI-FINALS
Niamh Giblin (Dun Laoghaire) bt Valerie Hassett (Ennis) 5 and 4.
Sheena McElroy (Grange) bt Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) 4 and 3.
FINAL
McElroy bt Giblin 7 and 6.
