US FUTURES TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Jodi Ewart lying joint fourth in New England Classic

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOURBLOOMFIELD, Connecticut:Gerina Mendoza extended her lead after today's second round of the $100,000 ING New England Golf Classic, putting together rounds of 62-65 for a 36-hole total of 13-under 127.
That performance established another tournament record for 36 holes, eclipsing the 9-under mark of 131 set by Alison Walshe in 2009 at the Pete Dye-designed Wintonbury Hills Golf Course outside Hartford.
It also gave Mendoza a five-shot cushion over Lehua Wise (65) of Kauai, Hawaii and Tiffany Joh (65) of San Diego, tied for second at 8-under 132.
"I was pretty nervous coming into today," said Mendoza of Roswell, New Mexico, who hit 15 greens and needed only 27 putts in today's round. "Saturdays are just my nervous days, but I stayed patient and aggressive. It's like a love-hate relationship with the pressure and the shot-making opportunities."
The third-year pro wasted no time, rolling in a 15-footer for birdie on the first hole, and playing the front nine at 4-under 31 with six birdies and one bogey. Making the turn to the back nine, she again slammed in a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 10, stumbled briefly on the 14th hole with a three-putt bogey from 20 feet, and then used her length off the tee on the 375-yard 15th hole for birdie, hammering a driver and gap wedge to 10 feet to set up another birdie.
"I love my driver," said Mendoza, one of the Tour's longest hitters, after today's round. "I feel like I can knock down pins if I can hit it to the greens. I wish I could tee it up again right now and go play another 18."
But just as Mendoza is eager to win her first tournament on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, so are Wise and Joh, who both recorded six birdies and one bogey in their respective rounds today.
"I haven't put together three solid rounds yet, so I was working hard to stay in the moment and not get ahead of myself," said Wise, playing in her second full season. "I sang. I thought about other stuff. I looked around. I was trying to distract myself."
That strategy seemingly worked as the Hawaiian saved pars and drained birdies throughout the round, taking her only bogey on the last hole when she missed the green and failed to get up and down for par.
Seeking a little more putting magic, Joh switched back to an old blade-style putter this morning. The switch worked, with the former two-time U.S. Women's Public Links champion capitalizing on a steady round that included no missed fairways, 14 greens in regulation and 27 putts.
Joh showed the growing maturity in her game today, with a steady 3-under performance on her front nine and three more birdies on her back nine holes. Her only bogey came on the 190-yard par-3 17th hole when she flirted with a hazard off the tee, pitched to four feet, but couldn't convert the par save.
"I wasn't coming out here today with the mindset of chasing down Gerina," said Joh, a former UCLA All-American playing in her first full season. "No matter what, Gerina is going to take it deep. She's long and straight. My mindset was to make birdies."
Six players, including second-ranked Cindy LaCrosse (66) of Tampa, Fla., are tied for fourth at 4-under 136 heading into Sunday's final round.
And while Mendoza, who has finished as runner-up twice this year with five top-10 finishes, would like to win and move up the 2010 money list from her No. 4 spot, the former University of Texas-El Paso player says all she can do is show up on Sunday and play her best.
"It's out of my control," she said. "God already knows what's going to happen. I'm so blessed."
A total of 27 players posted rounds under par, with 35 players carding rounds of even-par 140 or better on the hilly 6,087-yard, par-70 course.
Seventy-three players made the 36-hole cut at 143 (+3).
Weather: Sunny and humid with temperatures near the mid-90s, with winds from 8-12 mph.
