William beats Charlotte in Gullane

Primary School Final

By IAIN McLEAN
This year's Gullane Primary School Trophy was won for the second time by William Ladbrooke from Primary 5 . William played Charlotte Munro in the final, 18 holes on No 3 off the red tees, and quickly eased ahead after an excellent start.
Charlotte fought back with a birdie on the fifth but William responded with a birdie of his own on the sixth - fantastic golf from the two 10 year olds! Charlotte fought bravely but there was only going to be one winner on the night . Both scored in the 80s - William an 82 - around tricky No3.  Mature golf from two great prospects, pictured on the right.
Charlotte and William both do clubgolf coaching at Gullane and they are officially our two youngest members of Gullane Ladies GC and Gullane GC . Double delight this week for William as he has just received his membership following his 10th birthday last weekend and will play his first Junior Medal on Sunday and obtain his first handicap.
The Honor Bright Trophy is an annual match-play event introduced in 1922 by the then retiring headmaster of Gullane Primary School and it has been competed for ever since. Perhaps the oldest primary school golf competition ever? The trophy was presented at the school by Head Teacher Mrs Tremmel at the final assembly of the term. All kids at Gullane Primary receive an introduction to golf via clubgolf and about 50 of the current P5 - P7 pupils have gone on to clubgolf coaching.
Charlotte and William will both be back in 2011 with Charlotte hoping to be the first ever girl winner.
The other trophy played for at Gullane Primary is the Babe Zaharias Trophy which has run since 1964.
