Carter Claims First Professional Victory in Harrisburg

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE US DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania: Duramed Futures Tour rookie Dori Carter claimed her first professional title Sunday at the $110,000 Pennsylvania Classic. Carter (68) of Valdosta, Georgia, finished the tournament, held at The Golf Club at Felicita, at 12-under-par (204), one stroke over second-round co-leaders Melissa Eaton-Jackson (70) and Jennifer Song (70), who ended the tournament at 11-under-par (205).
Playing in the leader group for the first time in her professional career, Carter found herself soon at 2-over-par, following bogeys on four and five. Eaton-Jackson and Song started off with birdies. But Carter knew there was still a lot of golf to be played and decided to "hang in there."
"I wasn't really nervous at first but I got off to a slow start," said Carter, who recorded 14 top-10 finishes in collegiate competition while at the University of Mississippi. "But I knew I'd have to earn my spot and fight back."
Fight back she did. She followed the two bogeys with a birdie, and then following another bogey on seven, she ended her round with six additional birdies. Carter's play earned her praise from both Eaton-Jackson and Song.
"All credit goes to her," said Eaton-Jackson of Port Shepstone, South Africa. "She did an excellent job on the back nine."
"Dori played awesome out there," said Song of Ann Arbor, Michigan. "She was on a birdie fire. She had an awesome round and I just couldn't beat her."
The turning point for Carter came on No. 15. She was still two strokes back when Song's shot landed in the hazard. Song's third shot then landed out-of-bounds and she ended with a double-bogey.
"Fifteen shocked me," admitted Carter. "I thought 'Ok, big swing change.' I hit my shot onto the green then Jennifer had to take a drop. I thought she'd be fine but then she went out-of-bounds. I knew then it was mine to take if I wanted it."
Carter says she didn't take the time to do the math to try to figure out where she stood on the leaderboard. By the time the trio reached 18, and she was leading by one, she knew she wanted to make a good putt to win.
"That's when it hit me and the nerves kicked in," said Carter. "I gave it a good run, and left it a little short and I had to tap it in. But I'll take it."
Despite the double-bogey on 15, Song wasn't going to let it get into her head and was determined to finish strong.
"I was just like 'You shot good scores to off-set your screw-up hole,'" said Song, who won her professional debut two months ago at the Tate & Lyle Players Championship in Decatur, Illinois. "I tried to stay positive. There were three more holes left, no reason why I couldn't birdie three in a row."
Eaton-Jackson's runner-up finish marks her best results on the Duramed FUTURES Tour. She played consistently throughout the tournament, remaining at the top of the leaderboard through the first two rounds and feels that the best for her is yet to come.
"I had a great round," said Eaton-Jackson, winner of the Junior South African Golf Under-21 Girls' Championships. "I could have made a few more putts but it's by far the best finish I've had. I'm close. I think next week, I'll be the winner."
Sharing a tie for fourth at 8-under-par (208) are Dewi Claire Schreefel (67) of Diepenveen, Netherlands, Jenny Suh (68) of Fairfax, Va., Cindy LaCrosse (70) of Tampa, Fla., and Jenny Shin (70) of Torrance, Calif. Jenny Gleason (69) of Clearwater, Fla., finished in eighth at 7-under-par (209) and Lili Alvarez (68) of Durango, Mexico finished in ninth at 6-under-par (210). Tiffany Joh (69) of San Diego and Nontaya Srisawang (71) of Chiang Mai, Thailand finished in a tie for 10th at 5-under-par (211)
The Duramed FUTURES Tour moves on to Richmond, Virginia, next week for the Greater Richmond Golf Classic.
