LaCrosse "Family Affair" as she scores second Futures Tour win
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
SYRACUSE, New York State - With her dad on her bag and her mom in the gallery, Cindy LaCrosse of Tampa, Fla., claimed her second professional victory this season at the $100,000 Alliance Bank Golf Classic. LaCrosse shot 12-under-par (201) on the East Course of Drumlins Country Club.
"It was the first time he's caddied for me all year," said LaCrosse, who recorded her first victory in Mexico in March. "He knows my game so well. To have my dad, and also my mom, here gave me some extra confidence, whether he caddied for me or not."
LaCrosse and runner-up Amelia Lewis of Jacksonville, Fla., stayed consistently even throughout the front nine. Both would match birdies for birdies and bogeys for bogeys. It wasn't until the pair reached the more challenging back nine that LaCrosse would start to break away with "a good par save" on 15 and back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17. Lewis (70) would finish at 9-under-par (204).
"The speed on my putting got off," admits Lewis, a rookie on the Tour who's best previous finish was a tie for fifth at the Daytona Beach Invitational. "Cindy stayed strong and got pars, while I bogeyed. The rest is history."
For LaCrosse, her goal for the round was to go low. She was leading by two after 15 and had the motivation to keep going.
"I didn't want to have to think about it coming down to the last holes," said LaCrosse. "After the birdie on 16, I was glad to get a couple of shots lead."
With this victory, LaCrosse becomes the third Duramed FUTURES Tour professional to win twice in the 2010 season. Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., won back-to-back victories in Iowa and Ohio while Ryann O'Toole of San Clemente, Calif., won in Kansas and Kentucky. LaCrosse said this second victory has enabled her to "breathe out a little bit". She now moves back to the top of the 2010 Money List, a place she stated in the trophy presentation as a place she missed.
"I had a good start to the season," said La Crosse. "But I've really struggled at the last few events. This will allow me to feel better going in to the last few weeks."
With her second place finish, Lewis is also feeling better about the remaining three tournaments.
"This was the first time I was in the lead group and in contention," said Lewis. "To be so close, I didn't know how I would respond. Now I do. I know you keep going after birdies instead of falling back."
Finishing in third was Danah Ford Bordner of Indianapolis at 7-under-par (206). Bordner recorded the round's lowest score of 6-under (65), for which she gave credit to Drumlins Country Club Head Professional Sean Dadey.
"I talked to Sean before the round," said Bordner. "He's been so supportive this week. He said that I was due to make some putts today. I guess I made some putts today. It was good."
Bordner made a total of 120-feet of putts during her final round. She was bogey-free until she reached No. 15.
"I've been 2-over on that hole for the whole tournament," said Bordner. "It drives me crazy."
Jennifer Song (67) of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jane Rah (71) of Torrance, Calif., finished tied for fourth at 6-under-par (207). Ryan O'Toole (66) finished in sixth with Selanee Henderson (65) of Apple Valley, Calif., and Jessica Shepley (70) of Oakville, Ontario sharing a tie for seventh. Mo Martin (66) of Altadena, Calif., and Christine Song (71) finished tied for ninth.
