MAGUIRE TWINS PULLED OUT OF BRITISH STROKE-PLAY AT TENBY THIS WEEK
The talented 15-year-old Irish golfing twins, Leona and Lisa Maguire, have been withdrawn from the field for the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship, teeing off at Tenby Golf Club, South Wales on Wednesday.
Leona, the No 3 qualifier, lost in the third round of last week's British girls championship at Royal Belfast Golf Club. Lisa was beaten in the semi-finals.
They had arrived to play in the girls' tournament which started last Monday without a break after playing in the Irish Women's Open which ended on the Sunday.
A week or two ago Leona Maguire, who had been selected to play for Europe in Junior Ryder Cup match at Gleneagles on September 27-28, was also withdrawn from that tournament.
The Maguires' parents, Declan and Breda, are both school teachers. It would follow that they are more aware than most of the dangers of missing too many days at school.
At the moment both the Maguire girls remain in the Ireland team for the Women's Home Internationals at Whitchurch GC, Cardiff from September 8 to 10.
There will be 12 Scots in the British stroke-play field which is over four rounds at Tenby:
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), Eilidh Briggs (Kiomacolm), Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), Lauren Mackin (Majorca), Gillian Monteith (Portpatrick Dunskey), Laura Murray (Alford), Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Roseanne Niven (Crieff), Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), Rachael Taylor (Germany), Jane Turner (Craigielaw), Rachael Watton (Mortonhall).
