Murrayfield's Marvels - Ladies' team through
to UK last eight
Murrayfield Golf Club, Edinburgh ladies team are walking around feeling 10ft tall and as proud as Punch!
And so they should be after beating a team from Pontefract 3-2 on Saturday morning in Round 8 of the Mail on Sunday Classic national ladies' club match-play competition.
Norma Richmond contacted Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk to tell us all about it.
"We were delighted with our latest win.
"We travel to Worsley Park near Manchester on September 26. If successful there, we then travel to Spain for the semis and final.
"I noticed in the press last week that a men's team from the west was featured so, on behalf of my team, I thought it would be nice to 'blow our trumpet'. We are thrilled to bits. There will be one other Scottish team going to the quarter finals - Skelmorlie from Ayrshire. They beat Deer Park at the 19th to reach the last eight.
Our results against Pontefect were:
(Murrayfield names first)
Margaret Fergusson lost to Carol Longmire 2 and 1.
Ray Lynch bt Christine Davison 8 and 7.
Denise Mitchell bt Kath Douglas 6 and 5.
Norma Richmond bt Helen Roe 1 hole.
Caroline Johnstone lost to Chany Shaw 3 and 1.
"The teams we have beaten in the competition are Liberton 4-1, Musselburgh 3 1/2-1 1/2, Duddingston 3 1/2-1 1/2, Broomieknowe 4-1, Dollar 4-1, Downfield 3-2 and now Pontefract 3-2.
"We have a pool of eight players who all expressed an interest at the beginning of the year in playing in this competition - Caroline Johnstone (5) Norma Richmond (8), Ray Lynch (9), Finngerd Clark (10), Lynn Wilson (11), Rosie Dennis (11), Margaret Fergusson (12), Denise Mitchell (12).
From this pool, five have been chosen for each match.
"Each match consists of five singles match-play, off handicap, with the fifth player having to play on in the event of a tie.
"We have never progressed beyond the third round before, so are delighted to have got this far and are looking forward very much to going down to the Worsley Park Marriott Golf and Country Club for a practice round on Sunday, September 26, followed by the quarter final on the 27th.
"The most difficult thing is going to be choosing the team. Everyone is so keen to play and no one wants to be left out. We have decided all to go to the quarter-final and pick the team after the practice round."This means that we are in the last eight from the whole of the the UK (with a starting number of around 1,500 teams)," she said in an E-mail.
