Young England team were even better than last year!

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England stormed to victory in the Girls’ Home Internationals at Bangor, Northern Ireland when they defeated Wales 9-0 on the final day of the matches.
This was their third consecutive win in the championship and the ninth time in the last 11 years that they have won the Stroyan Cup. Scotland were runners-up for the second year in a row. They beat Ireland 5½ -3½ to finish with two wins to their credit.
The young England team played superbly throughout the event, winning 23 points and conceding just four in their three matches. Overall, they won 22 games, halved two and lost only three. It was an even better performance than last year’s victory when the girls conceded 4½ points.
England captain Faye Sanderson said: “The whole team have been absolutely brilliant, they have all played great. The standard of golf in this afternoon’s singles was just fantastic – this is a very low scoring team!”
Linda Bayman, the English Women’s Golf Association’s Performance Director, remarked: “Huge congratulations to this very promising, young team who have again delivered an amazing result. We must also give full credit to our very able captain, Faye Sanderson, and our hard-working coach, Pat Smillie.”
The girls set the ball rolling in the morning foursomes. Hayley Davis and Georgia Hall won the last two holes to take their point. Alex Peters and Elizabeth Mallett were three up at the turn and closed out their match on the 15th. Heidi Baek and Emily Taylor had a tight match but they moved ahead after the 11th and stayed there.
In the singles, Hayley Davis – the English champion – lost the third but immediately got back to all square and was never again behind. English girls’ champion Elizabeth Mallett was also involved in a close match and crucially won the 17th to go one up, before halving the last to seal her win.
Emily Taylor was down for most of the front nine but squared matters on the 10th and then took control to win on the 16th. Alex Peters lost just one hole in her match and closed out her opponent on the 13th. Lauren Taylor stamped her authority on her game on the outward half, getting to five up at the turn and winning on the 15th. Bronte Law completed England’s clean sweep when she held her nerve to birdie the 18th and claim her point.
