NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Northamptonshire’s Meghan MacLaren led the English girls’ challenge with a fine four-under par-70 in the first round of the North of England U16 championship at Pannal, Yorkshire,
The 16-year-old member of the English Women’s Golf Association’s championship squad, is one shot behind the first round girls’ leader, Clara Baena of Spain.
Meghan, from Wellingborough, had one eagle – on the par five, sixth hole - and four birdies in her round. It was described by Pat Smillie, England’s national junior coach, as: “A really fantastic round. This is a course where you have to hit it straight and Meghan obviously found lots of fairways and greens.”
Meghan’s score underlines her excellent form this season in which she has already won both the Midlands South regional women’s and girls’ titles and the English schools' championship.
The other members of the EWGA squad at the championship are: Georgina Mundy (Dunwood Manor) 75, Brogan Townend (Pleasington) 76, Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer) 77, Shelby Smart (Knowle) and Olivia Winning (Rotherham) both 79. All the girls are in EWGA Select regional squads.
Pat Smillie said: “It was a very nice opener, I am very pleased with Meghan’s round and the fact that all our players broke 80.” After the second round the mixed field will be cut to the leading 40 players.
Other English players who have made a good start to the tournament include Abi Laker of Burford, Oxfordshire, who shot two-under 72 and Wiltshire champion Kyra Horlock (Broadstone) who returned 73. Yorkshire’s Jade Downes (Boothferry) returned 74, one ahead of Lucy Evans (Wrekin) and Bronte Law (Bramhall) who was the winner of last year’s mixed event.
The first day’s play was preceded by the annual mixed U16 international against Spain in which England retained the trophy by the margin of 9-3. England’s boys were on top form, winning all their matches. The girls won both foursomes, with Brogan Townend and Meghan MacLaren taking their point 4 and 3, while Georgina Mundy and Olivia Winning succeeded 2 and 1. Olivia went on to win her singles and was two-under par when she won her match 4 and 3, beating the Spanish U16 champion.

Pat Smillie said: “The foursomes partnerships had not been tested before and therefore this result was very encouraging.”
