Meghan MacLaren leading English girl at Pannal

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Teenager Meghan MacLaren led the English challenge at the North of England U16 championship at Pannal, Yorkshire.

The 16-year-old from Wellingborough was two-under par for 72 holes and finished runner-up in the championship, three shots behind Spain’s Clara Baena.

Meghan was one of five members of the English Women’s Golf Association championship squad to make the final day and she rounded off her tournament with scores of three-under 71 and 75. She hit 16 out of 18 fairways in her morning round and in the afternoon got to three-under after 10, before dropping a few shots on the way home.

Third place went to last year’s champion, Bronte Law (Bramhall), while squad player Brogan Townend (Pleasington) was fourth. She was followed by Shelby Smart (Knowle) who completed the event with a two-under 72, and Olivia Winning (Rotherham) who had her first hole-in-one on the 189-yard 15th where she used a four iron. The fifth squad member was 14-year-old Amber Ratcliffe of Royal Cromer.

Pat Smillie, EWGA’s national junior coach, said: “We had some really good results from our next group of up and coming players. This is a long event, at the end of the season, and the results are very encouraging.”
