IRISH SENIOR CUP AT CORK
ROYAL PORTRUSH THROUGH TO
SEMI-FINALS
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Saturday’s semi-finals of the Irish Senior Cup will see Douglas do battle with Laytown and Bettystown, while Lahinch will face Royal Portrush at Cork Golf Club.
Douglas booked their place in the semis after a tough battle with Midland Champions Carlow. Ailish Thompson recorded an early win for the southern side with a 9 and 8 victory over Madeline Brennan, before Karen O’Neill followed with a chip-in eagle 3 on the first tie hole to beat Carlow’s Aedin Murphy.
Eavan Higgins found herself four down in the early stages of her duel with Karen Delaney but secured the win and a place in the semi-finals for Douglas on the home green.
Douglas’ opponents tomorrow, Laytown and Bettystown progressed to the semis with a comfortable win over Slieve Russell who were without the talents of the Maguire twins who were at the British Girls’ Amateur Championship in Royal Belfast.
A concession at the bottom of the order followed by early wins for former international star Carol Wickham and Barbara Cooney sealed the win for the Eastern champions.
Lahinch secured their place in the semis through up and coming star Sinead Sexton who defeated current girls’ international Sarah Helly by a margin of 3 and 2, while Linda Toomey also recorded a win by the same margin over the 2007 Irish Girls’ Close Champion Kate Gallagher.
Senior Irish International Valerie Hassett produced at 6 and 5 win in the fourth match to progress the southern side to the semi-finals.
Ulster champions Royal Portrush, led by current international, Charlene Reid who produced a one-hole win over Aisling O’Leary, made it through to the semis, thanks to additional wins for Niamh Quigg and Helen Jones.
