ROYAL PORTRUSH TOP SEEDS AT
IRISH SENIOR CUP FINALS
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The five District Champions Royal Portrush, Carlow, Laytown and Bettystown, Lahinch and Claremorris will join this year’s back-door graduates Slieve Russell, Douglas nd Wexford in the Irish quarter-finals of the 2010 Senior Cup at Cork Golf Club, 13 August.
Favourites Royal Portrush will look to current International Charlene Reid to lead the Antrim side to their fifth title in eight years having last won at Galway two years ago. Reid will be joined by experienced past Internationals Helen Jones and Gemma McClenaghan and will face an inexperienced Wexford team making their debut in the quarter finals. With past Girls International Aisling O’Leary at the helm, her teammates will need to punch well above their weight to cause an upset to the side with 23 national titles to date.
Second favourites Carlow face a vastly experienced Douglas side with Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann looking to upset the Midlanders. Past Internationals Aedin Murphy and Karen Delaney are joined by talented Anne McCormack and should prove too strong for the Cork side on this occasion.
The third quarter final sees Laytown and Bettystown play Slieve Russell who, depending on their progress in the British Girls Matchplay, could have the sensational Maguire twins in their ranks. The Maguires were instrumental in securing Slieve Russell’s runner up spot in the Ulster finals and alongside Bronagh Lunney and Ann Monteith could claim their first national title if they overcome Alison Taylor and the legendary Wickham sisters Phil and Carol who’s powerful iron play brightened the amateur game for two decades in the eighties.
The final tie sees Connacht Champions Claremorris play a new look Lahinch side who boast Linda Toomey and Sinead Sexton as potential headline grabbers. Seniors International Valerie Hassett adds experience while Claremorris will be very ably led by Girls International Sarah Helly and alongside sisters Kate and Sarah Gallagher will make this the most hotly contested of the four quarter finals.
All four quarter-finals take place on Friday 13 August with the semi-finalists lining up Saturday morning at 8am. Whatever the outcome, Saturday is sure to see a feast of competitive golf for the ILGU’s blue-ribboned Senior Cup as the cream of elite club golf convene at Cork for the weekend.
