DEFEATS FOR MARILYN AND PAMLEA
BIGGEST FORM UPSETS AT ST ANDREWS
The first seven seeds in the Strathtyrum Trophy women’s golf tournament over the Eden Course, St Andrews all progressed with varying degrees of comfort into the last 16.
Top qualifier and three times former trophy winner Karen Marshall (Baberton) won by 5 and 4 against the last of the 32 qualifiers, Dawn Pearson from South Africa, by 5 and 4 and now plays Jennifer Fallows (Manchester) who qualified in 16 place and won her opening tie against Martina Wegers-Fliegner from Germany by 4 and 2.
The No 2 seed, Nicola Rawlinson (Royal Birkdale) had to work slightly harder to chalk up a 3 and 2 win over Rhiannon Evans (Langland Bay), the 32nd qualifier.
The only form upsets were defeats for the Nos 7 and eight seeds and former winners of the tournament, Germany-based Marilyn Henderson and Baberton’s Pamela Williamson.
Marilyn, winner of the title in 1996, 2005 and again in 2007, lost by 3 and 2 to the No 26 qualifier Deborah Ross (Arcot Hall) while Pamela was beaten on the last green by No 24 qualifier Lorna Armstrong (Newtonstewart).
Defending champion Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus), who qualified in fourth place had the joint biggest win of the round, by 7 and 6 over Claire Richardson (Burnham Beeches).
Elaien Clark (Manchester), the No 6 seed, also won by 7 and 6 at the expense of Jane Weatherall (Woburn).
