Julie Yang in fifth place after second-round 71 at Whittington Heath

Teenagers lead from Kelsey in English women's stroke-play

Teenagers Rachael Goodall and Charley Hull share the lead at the halfway stage of the English women’s open strokeplay championship at Whittington Heath, Staffordshire.
Both have returned two level par scores of 72 over the first 36 holes but Rachael, 19, (Heswall) was top qualifier for the remaining two rounds, by virtue of her last nine holes. She came home in one-under par 35, while 14-year-old Charley scored one-over 37.
Rachael, who was the 2009 North region women’s champion, is on good form this season having set a six-under par course record at Clitheroe. Meanwhile Charley has won two top scratch events this year.
They lead the top 36 qualifiers and ties – a total of 38 players – for the final 36 holes of the tournament. The cut, at the end of a blustery day when scores rose with the strengthening wind, fell on 10-over par 154.
First round leaders Kelsey MacDonald and Katherine O’Connor both returned second round scores of 74 and share third place, one shot behind the leaders. They’re just ahead of Korea’s Julie Yang, 15, who was one of two players to beat par with one-under 71 in the second round.
Julie added it to her opening 75 to move into fifth place. “Yesterday, nothing really went for me but today I lessened my mistakes, although it could have been better. My iron shots were pretty good, I was hitting it inside 5ft, but I didn’t really make any of the putts.”
Julie, who has a plus-five handicap, has won the Welsh open strokeplay title this season, came within a whisker of winning the German amateur championship, and played in the Ricoh Women’s British Open. That was her sixth appearance in a professional event but her first in a major and she said: “It was great fun, I loved the atmosphere and all the spectators, it was completely different. It gave me a lot of confidence.”
Essex champion Daisy Dyer also shot one-under 71 to share seventh place. She was under par or level for most of her round before dropping “silly” shots on 16 and 17. She made up for it, however, with a perfect eagle on the last, where she hit the green in two and holed a 20-footer.
“I’ve been working hard on my short game this year and it’s really paying off,” said Daisy, who has cut her handicap from three to scratch and was runner-up in the Critchley Salver.
