British girls open amateur championship at Royal Belfast Golf Club
THREE SCOTS QUALIFY FOR MATCH-PLAY STAGES
Three Scots – Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies), Hannah McCook (Abernethy) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) – made it through among the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the British girls open amateur golf championship at bright but breezy Royal Belfast Golf Club today (Tuesday).
Mortonhall’s Rachael Watton saw her hopes die after a heart-break second round of 82 (41-41) for 157. She had a triple bogey 7 at the 10th after an outward half of only three pars. Her only birdie of the round came at the par-5 last but it was too little, too late.
Germany-based Rachael Taylor had a 78 for 158 and Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) a 76 (an improvement of eight strokes) for 160.
Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) missed out on 165 with scores of 83 and 82.
Angus girls and women’s champion Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) bowed on on 147 (84-83). Like Gabrielle, Ailsa played way below her potential.
Gillian Simpson (Murrayfield) had rounds of 99 and 91 for 190.
Scottish girls champion Lesley Atkins did well in a damage-limitation exercise in the windy conditions for the second half of the field. Birdies at the third and fourth helped her hold it all together for a four-over-par 74 and a total of 149.
Hannah McCook had a double bogey 5 at the short seventh and was five over par for the day after 10 holes but a pair of birdie 2s at the short 11th and 17th helped her get home in only one over-par 36 for a 75 and a a total of 154.
Eilidh Briggs hit the limit mark of 155 with scores of 77 and 78 and had a long wait until the end play before the LGU organisers and their computer decreed that two Spaniards and a French player who had totals of 155 but the poorest second rounds – 80, 80 and 81 – would be eliminated.
Musselburgh-based Julie Yang is the No 1 seed with scores of 69 and 72.
