Belvoir Park, Mountbellew and Bandon
Claim All-Ireland Titles
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The final day of play at Donabate Golf Club in the 2010 Irish Ladies Golf Union Inter-club Championships, resulted in Belvoir Park, Mountbellew and Bandon capturing the Senior Foursomes, Junior Foursomes and Challenge Cup titles respectively.
A bright start to Sunday’s play saw Killarney take an early lead in the Senior Foursomes final versus Belvior Park. The Kerry side held slender leads in the first two matches through the turn but Julie Morrison and Pauline Bailie looked to be taking control of the last match for Belvoir Park, being two up at the halfway stage.
Current Irish Senior International Violet McBride and partner Gail Linter struggled to find the pace of the greens in the top match and were two down through nine but quickly turned the match in favour of the Belfast side, winning the 10th and 11th to level the match.
A par at the 15th saw McBride and Linter go ahead for the first time against Killarney’s Margaret Hayes and Ailish Mulcahy, before a half at the 16th and a superb second shot by Gail Linter on the 17th to 1ft was good enough to win the hole and the match for Belvoir Park.
The second match proved to be a close encounter with the Killarney paring of Mary Sheehy and Amy Arthur one up at the turn and increasing their lead to two after 15.
However, Jenny Gibson and Jenny Russell fought back, winning the 16th thanks to a chip-in from just off the green and with a piece of good fortune on the 17th, seeing their ball strike a tree and stay in bounds while Killarney were not afforded the same good luck, the match returned to all square.
A favourable ruling for Belvoir Park on the 18th regarding out of bounds, allowed them to force extra holes and with Killarney’s Margaret Campion and Anne Moynihan leveling the third match after 16 holes, the title hung in the balance.
A solid short game over the closing holes in this tie enabled Morrison and Bailie to win the 17th. A regulation par at the 18th was enough to give Belvoir Park the win and the title for the first time.
Mountbellew had a slightly more comfortable win in the Junior Foursomes final against Dublin City. The top match saw Siobhan Fallon and Mary Hyland produce an excellent up and down on the ninth to maintain a one-hole lead over Dublin City’s Grace O’Neill and Leonie Colgan.
Wins followed at the 13th, 15th and a concession at the 16th gave the match to the Galway side.
Helen Costello and Caroline Delaney got off to a dream start in the last match by winning the opening two holes. They held the lead for the remainder of the day, holing numerous pressure putts along the way to keep Dublin City’s Elaine Hartigan and Shiela Stone, at bay and secure the win by a 5 and 3 margin to take the title west.
Joan Shields and Ger Lynch provided a bright moment for Dublin City, winning at the 18th against Mountbellew’s Connie O’Brien and Kathleen Bergin in the second match, giving a final score-line of 2-1 in favour of Mountbellew.
Bandon emerged as winners of the Challenge Cup with a 3-2 victory over Dun Laoghaire. It was the Dublin team which got in front first, thanks to Emer O’Sullivan and Katherine Verso claiming wins in the first and third matches by margins of 4 and 2 and 6 and 5 respectively.
Bandon held slight leads in the remaining three matches at the halfway point and were led to victory by Eveline Fogarty who maintained her 100% record for the championship by scoring a fine 3 and 1 win in second match against Dun Laoghaire’s Helen Waters.
Theresa Burke then followed with a 3 and 2 win in the penultimate game, leaving the fate of the title in the hands of Michelle Anders who had moved to dormie four up against Bernie Keogh.
Anders duly delivered with a 3 and 2 win to bring the title south, much to the delight of the many travelling Bandon supporters.
