Droitwich's magical year continues ...
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Droitwich golfers Fiona Whittock and Tracey Ward continued their club’s magical year when they won the grand final of the Australian Spoons at Kedleston Park, Derbyshire.
They scored 33 points to win EWGA’s national stableford foursomes competition for players with handicaps 21-36. The tournament is run in association with Volvo.
Their victory meant Droitwich went one better than last year when another club pair, Julia Kyte and Pauline Welveart, were runners-up at the national final.
“We were under a bit of pressure,” joked Tracey. “They kept saying ‘Go one better than us!’” Fiona added: “We are absolutely delighted to win. I think I can say for all the competitors that we have had a fantastic time, the whole experience has been superb.”
Their win is the latest in a series of outstanding 2010 successes by Droitwich ladies, who have reached three national finals and won a regional foursomes competition.
The Australian Spoons final was contested by six pairs who had each won their club qualifier and a regional final. They played the grand final on the last day of the English Counties’ Championship, rubbing shoulders with some of the country’s best players. Fiona remarked: “It’s been a great experience to watch the county golf.”
Fiona and Tracey won by six points but the other places were very closely contested. The second and third placed groups could not be separated on the last nine, six, three or one holes. The countback was finally decided on the front six holes.
The competitors were the overnight guests of EWGA and were entertained to dinner the evening before the final and after they had played, to afternoon tea with EWGA president, Ann Irvin.
Qualifying for next year’s Australian Spoons final starts in November. Competitors may play as many times as they like during the club qualifying period and they can enter with different partners. Details have been sent to all clubs.
