England look to pick themselves up
against Scotland
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England suffered a setback to their Home International title hopes when they were beaten 8-1 by a strong Irish side on the opening day of the series at Whitchurch, Cardiff.
The Irish team includes three Curtis Cup players - Danielle McVeigh and the twins, Leona and Lisa Maguire - and they were on great form.
England captain Chris Williamson commented: “The Irish played extremely well. We didn’t play badly but they had more birdies than us.”
She added: “Obviously it’s a blow. I think the team have taken on board that the Irish played extremely well and hopefully we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and tomorrow will be another day.”
England’s solitary point came from Charlotte Ellis and Tara Watters who played solid golf for a fine 6/5 win over Danielle McVeigh and Charlene Reid. But the other two foursomes went Ireland’s way, as did every singles match.
The statistics for the singles highlighted what England was up against. English champion Hayley Davis took Danielle McVeigh to the 16th – but she had two birdies compared to the Irish player’s five. Charley Hull, 14, was one-under par when she lost her match on the 15th. Curtis Cup player Hannah Barwood faced the Irish champion who was three-under after five, four-under after nine and five-under after 10.
In the day’s other match Scotland beat defending champions Wales 6½-2½. England play Scotland, while Wales meet Ireland on Day 2.
