ILGU INTER-CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Enniscorthy v Royal Belfast in

Junior Cup FinalNEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Day Two of the ILGU Inter-Club Championships at Donabate Golf Club resulted in Enniscorthy and Royal Belfast booking their place in tomorrow’s final of the Junior Cup. Kilcoole secured a place in the Intermediate Cup final against Fota Island, while Portumna and Malone emerged victorious in their respective Minor Cup Semi Finals.
In addition, Belvoir Park, Mountbellew and Bandon progressed to Saturday’s semi finals of the Senior Foursomes, Junior Foursomes and Challenge Cup respectively.

A bright Friday morning saw Belvoir Park get the day’s matches underway with a well fought 2-1 win over The Heath. The top match proved to be the decider with the Northern side claiming the win thanks to Gail Linter holing a 15ft downhill putt on the home green to partner current Irish Senior’s International Violet McBride to a one-hole victory. Earlier in the third match Julie Morrison and Pauline Bailie won 3 holes in a row to claim a win on the penultimate hole giving Belvoir Park a place in tomorrow’s semi-finals against Co Sligo.

Mountbellew progressed to the semi finals of the Junior Foursomes, also with a 2-1 win over opponents Moate. In the top match Kathleen Conlon and Anita McLoughlin recorded a 2 and 1 win, sparked by a chip-in for birdie on the ninth hole which started them on a run of winning the next four holes to take control of the match.
Veronica Coughlan and Eleanor Fitzpatrick levelled the tie with a 2 and 1 win for Moate in the second match before the final match saw the Mountbellew pair of Helen Costello and Caroline Delaney produce a superb up and down on the 16th to win the hole and move to dormie two up. With the 17th halved in pars, a 2 and 1 win was secured for Mountbellew which now sees them face Limerick in Saturday’s Junior Cup semi-final.
Bandon had a convincing win over Kilrea in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup, with the first four matches won comforatably and the final match called-in resulting in a 4½-½ win for the southern team who will now take on Mullingar in the semi-finals.
Enniscorthy and Royal Belfast recorded 3½-1½ wins against East Cork and Tuam respectively in the semi-finals of the Junior Cup and will do battle tomorrow for the Junior Cup title.

The Intermediate Cup final will be contested by Kilcoole, who disposed of Galway Bay in today’s semi final, and Fota Island who had a hard earned victory against Dungannon. The Munster team suffered early losses in the first and third matches but Rose Beamish set Fota on their way to Saturday’s semi finals with a 5 and 3 win in the last match before Mary O’Leary edged a 2&1 win in the second match and Patricia O’Sullivan held her nerve to par the 18th and take the tie for Fota Island.

Saturday’s final of the Minor Cup should be a tense and exciting affair with both Portumna and Malone producing some excellent golf to outplay their respective opposition, Youghal and Mullingar, and progress to the final comfortably.
