Irish LGA Inter-Club Championships
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The ILGU Inter-Club Championships take place this week at Donabate Golf Club, Dublin, from Thursday to Sunday (September 23 to 26).
The Championships consist of six events - four singles match-play competitions and two foursomes match-play competitions, for golfers with varying handicap ranges. Now in their fifth year, the 2010 ILGU Inter-Club Championships have seen 350 clubs enter at least one of the six competitions with over 15,000 players involved.
The championships commenced in April with preliminary and first rounds taking place in clubs across the five districts (North, South, West, East Leinster and Mid Leinster) before finals were held in late August and early September to crown District champions for each competition and determine the All-Ireland finalists. The six national Champions will receive the All-Ireland trophy and a coveted green pennant.
The foursomes championships consist of matchplay between three pairs in Senior (+ to 14 handicap, max combined 24) and Junior (15 to 30 handicap, max combined 52) categories while the singles championships consist of five players per team in the categories of Junior (8 to 15 handicap), Intermediate (16 to 22 handicap), Minor (23 to 29 handicap) and Challenge (30 to 36 handicap).
None of the 2009 All-Ireland champions will have the chance to defend their national titles as they have all failed to retain their district crowns. However, four clubs - Belvoir Park, Dun Laoghaire, Moate and Mullingar will have the chance to “do the double” this year, having qualified for the national finals in more than one competition.
The Senior Foursomes title will be contested between Killarney, Co. Sligo, The Heath, Malahide and Belvoir Park. The Heath include three juniors on their team, while the Malahide side features Lily Owens a former international cricketer and Belvoir Park, who will also compete in the Junior Foursomes competition, boast the talents of team captain Violet McBride who is a current member of the Irish Senior Ladies Team.
Belvoir Park will be joined in the Junior Foursomes by Dublin City who were last year's Junior Cup national champions, in addition to Mountbellew who were beaten finalist in 2008, Limerick and Moate who will also contest the Intermediate Cup.
The Junior Cup sees Royal Belfast, Tuam, Enniscorthy, East Cork and Dun Laoghaire do battle, while the Intermediate Cup line-up is completed by Kilcool, Dungannon, Fota Island and Galway Bay who were also national finalists last year.
Hazel Grove have called on all of their 32 lady members to play some part in their journey to the national finals of the Minor Cup where they will compete against Malone, Youghal, Portumna and Mullingar who also contest the Challenge Cup. Mullingar are joined in the Challenge Cup by other “double” hopefuls Dun Laoghaire who will look to mark their centenary year with a winning green pennant but will face stiff competition from Ballina, Bandon and national final debutants Kilrea.
