Welsh girls champion Rachel shares lead in 'Great Smokies'
Welsh girls champion Rachel Lewis, 17, from Cardiff is sharing the lead with three other players after the first round of the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate tournament at Waynesville Country Club, North Carolina.
Rachel, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency at the Girls Home Internationals at Bangor, who enrolled at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg in August, had a round of three-under-ar 69 with halves of 34 and 35 over the 5,922yd course.
Hannah Coles (Radford University, Virginia) from Birmingham is lying 10th in a big field of 124 players. She had halves of 36 and 35 for a 71.
Kim Bradbury (Old Dominion) from Derbyshire had a 74 (36-38) to be sharing 21st place.
Sammy Vass from Tain in the North of Scotland, now a student at Gardner Webb University, is sharing 29th position with a 75 (39-36).
Completing the roll call of British and Irish players in the field, Stephanie Gough (Middle Tennessee) from Ayrlesbury and Emma Gilmore (Old Dominion) from Ireland had rounds of 77 (37-40) and 82 (41-41)respectively.
This tournament finishes on Sunday.
Sarah Faller, Ellie Givens make top 20 at Albuquerque
Sarah Faller (Denver University) from Galway and team-mate Ellie Givens from Darlington) finished joint eighth and joint 15th respectively in a field of 92 for the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire tournament over the University of New Mexico's championship course at Albuquerque.
Sarah had scores of 76, 73 and 71 for 220 over a par-73 course 6,187yd long.
Ellie score 75, 70 and 77 for 222.
Winner was Erica Omlid (Oregon) with 70, 72 and 69.
Oregon (881) won the team title ahead of Ohio State (883) and Colorado (884). Denver (892) shared fourth place with UC Davis, whose head coach is a Scot, Anne Walker.
Tom Rennie down the field in South Carolina
Aberdeen's Tom Rennie (Brevard College) finished joint 46th in a field of 58 players at the Honda Columbia Fall Classic at Mid Carolina Country Club, Prosperity in South Carolina.
Tom started well enough with a one-over-par 73 but slumped to an 85 in the second round for a total of 158.
At the top of the leaderboard were Newberry team-mates Ben Lown (78-82) and Matthew Campbell (71-69) on 140 over a par 72 course of 6,679yd.
Newberry College (569) won the team event by 10 shots from UNC Pembroke. Brevard College (615) finished last of eight.
