WOMEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS

Skipper Lesley changes winning

foursomes line-up for title decider

Lesley Nicholson, skipper of a Scotland team that will play Ireland in the women’s home golf internationals title decider at Whitchurch Golf Club, Cardiff tomorrow, has taken the bold step of changing the foursomes line-up that gave Scotland a 3-0 lead over England at lunchtime today.
She has dropped Mortonhall teenager Rachael Watton and Alford’s experienced Laura Murray, both of whom were beaten by significant margins in the afternoon singles as Scotland won only two out of six, enough to give the Scots a 5-4 win and maintain their 100 per cent record.
Into the morning line-up comes Selkirk’s 45-year-old Martine Pow to replace Watton as Megan Briggs’ partner and Aberdeen student Jane Turner (Craigielaw) teams up with Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell). one of only three players in the tournament with four wins from four games (Ireland’s talented 15-year-old twins Lisa and Leona Maguire are the others).
Ireland have won 11 of the 12 singles ties over Wednesday and Thursday’s play but if they have a weak point it is in the foursomes.
Somehow or other Scotland have to establish a 2-1 lead before lunchtime and share the singles by winning the three ties that don’t feature the Maguires or the third Curtis Cup player in the Irish line-up, Danielle McVeigh.
But skipper Nicholson doesn’t see it that way.
“There is absolutely no reason why we cannot beat Ireland and win the home internationals title for the first since 1991,” she said.

*Whitchurch Golf Club has a problem with bugs that bite out on the course. SLGA president Emma Wilson suffered enough bites on her legs and ankles over two days to warrant a visit to the local Accident and Emergency Hospital for treatment to the sores. Most of the players have also been the victims of the “beasties” but not badly enough to land them in hospital.
