Carol Fell: Much more than

a Website Wonder Lady

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Carol Fell has been part of my website blogging life for the past few years and we had met in the passing at national golf events but it was not until the Scottish golf writers’ and guests’ tournament at Mar Hall, Bishopton earlier this week that I felt we got to know each other a lot better than through E-mails.
A late addition to a shrinking field, Carol, playing off 10, scored 15pt over Mar Hall’s second nine – frost prevented us playing the first nine – and SLGA Tournament Officer and former international Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) pipped her only by a single Stableford point for the “Leading Lady” prize.
Carol struck me as being a very interesting character, worthy of a wee feature, at least, on Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk. So I asked her to write it herself!
And here is Carol’s life story – almost – in her own words:
“After working as a Biochemical Scientist in Glasgow Royal Infirmary for 32 years I took early retirement in 2002 and then thought I would have a bash at setting up golf websites to promote golf in first of all Renfrewshire County
“Gillian (Kirkwood) helped me with many of the questions of how to do it and I thank her for that.
And then it went on from there and I started the West of Scotland Site and the West Vets Website plus as I said the Ranfurly Castle Ladies Website plus Enjoy Music (click all links)
“I then set up the RLCGA Website in 2003 and websites to cover the West of Scotland Ladies' Golf and the West Division Scottish Veterans Ladies' Golf News
“After working for so long on the health service I often say to people I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!
“Anyway, having taken nearly two years to write the RLCGA Centenary Book – I was rubbish at English at school - I cannot believe I am trying to write stories now.
“It is great if people send you their news or can "blog" it themselves
“Hockey, tennis and squash were my main sports and then I took up golf in 1975.
“I was in the winning Scottish schoolgirls' tennis team in 1969, in a Scottish hockey touring team to the United States in 1973 and played squash for the West of Scotland in the early 1970s.
“Played in all of these sports until my mid-40s when my knees decided enough was enough!
“I joined Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association in 1982 and have made many friends throughout the years in the wide golfing circle that county golf brings.
“My home club is Ranfurly Castle and I am also a member of Douglas Park GC and an honorary member of Renfrewshire LCGA.
“The highlight of my RLCGA membership was being selected as a reserve for the county team by captain Margaret Horne, in 1991. The matches were played at West Kilbride and I was relieved not to be needed, but delighted to be a very much involved "caddy."
“Other highlights have been winning the Ranfurly Castle ladies' championship four times; the Douglas Park Ladies' Championship; the RLCGA Challenge Bowls three times; and the RLCGA Winter Foursomes twice with Heather Davidson. I was also captain of Ranfurly Castle in 1985/1986 and a member of the team that won the West of Scotland Greenlees Trophy for the first time in 2004. Over my golfing career I have managed five holes in one!
“I was made an Honorary Member of RLCGA last November in recognition “outstanding services to the county.”
“My book, Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf 1909 – 2009, was self published.”
