England players prepare for World Championship
The countdown is on for the start of the women’s World Amateur Team Championship in Argentina and the England players are immersed in their preparations to challenge for the title.
The 72-hole championship begins on Wednesday and will be played at Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club. A record number of 53 teams have entered the bi-annual event.
Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) and Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) tee off for England at Olivos on Wednesday, when they will play in the company of the Norwegian and Korean teams.
The following day they’ll switch to Buenos Aires, playing alongside New Zealand and Italy. The best two scores will count on each of the four days of the event.
In the build-up to the championship the players are working hard with England coach Steve Robinson and captain Jim Robinson.
“You can never guarantee winning, but you can always guarantee that you prepare to the best of your ability – and that’s what we’re doing,” said Steve, as the team headed out today for their third practice round.
“We’ve been mapping out the courses and getting our game plan ready for the event – and that’s different for each player. They all have different strengths and attributes.” The emphasis, throughout the preparation, has been on the short game and putting.
“The courses are fantastic, very, very good courses and they’re in great condition. The girls have very good caddies and they’re working very well together,” added Steve.
“It’s brilliant,” said Hannah Burke, who was among an exodus of USA-based golf students who flew in to Argentina. “The hotel is in the centre of Buenos Aires and we’ve been able to have a little tour – it’s absolutely amazing – and the courses are really, really good.
“They’re totally different. Buenos Aires is very American with water, big greens and big bunkers while Olivos is tree-lined and the greens are smaller.”
Holly Clyburn remarked: “We’re all working together as a good team and the golf is coming along nicely. We’re all very determined and quite confident, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We’re just taking it a step at a time and practising as hard as we can.”
The girls are caught up in the atmosphere of a major event and looking forward to Wednesday. “There’s a lot of people around, the tents are up and it’s great, a good tournament,” said Kelly Tidy, the British champion. “We can’t wait to get started.”
