Penalised Monty beaten by Ochoa in China pro-celeb event

HAIKOU, China (AP) -- Lorena Ochoa came out of retirement and made $1.28 million with a two-shot victory today over Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie in the pro-celebrity Star Trophy at Mission Hills, China

Ochoa, the Mexican star who retired last year at the top of her game, had rounds of 71-71 to earn the winner-take-all cheque. Montgomerie was penalised two shots after his caddie moved a sign on the 16th hole.
The incident occurred when Montgomerie’s drive finished a couple of yards behind an advertising sign in the fairway, which blocked the player’s second shot to the hole. Montgomerie’s caddie, Jason Hempleman, and a marshal pulled the sign out of the ground in breach of a local rule.
“Under the conditions of this competition, which are given to every player, the advertising signs (are) temporary immovable instructions,” tournament director David Parkin said. “You can't move them. Unfortunately for Colin, his caddie has helped in the movement of this board. As soon as he moved that it's a two-stroke penalty under our conditions.”
Montgomerie conferred for several minutes after his round with Parkin before signing his card.
Earlier, Parkin approached Montgomerie on the 18th tee to inform the player of the problem. Montgomerie was clearly livid: “David, please don’t start this,” he said.
“Nobody else has moved them,” Parkin said of the signs.
Ochoa said the exhibition victory wasn't enough to make her consider coming out of retirement. She says she was going to go back to Mexico "really happy."
Candie Kung and Hong Kong celebrity Eric Tsang won the team competition.
According to Golfchannel.com, Japanese star Ryuji Imada incurred a 26-shot penalty when it was determined he improperly placed his ball during lift, clean and place. Imada wasn't informed until the 12th hole, and had to sign for a 97.
The field included Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam and Nick Faldo, along with celebrities Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hugh Grant, Michael Phelps and Matthew McConaughey.
Editor's Note: The report did not give Colin Montgomerie's scores.
