JUNIOR MASTERS AT RENAISSANCE CLUB
Dalbeattie's Tom Niven and Charlotte Munro (Gullane) won the boys' and girls' titles at today's clubgolf Junior Masters Grand Final for under-16 years golfers at the Renaissance Club, East Lothian.
Tom, 16, who has been playing golf for only 18 months but, coached by Brian Gemmell, has his handicap down to 18, was easily the top scorer on a wet but eventually sunny afternoon with 44 Stableford points, the equivalent to a net score of eight under par.
Niven's gross score over the par-71 lay-out was 83 (46-37) and the breakdown of his points gathering was 18 for holes one to nine and an trophy-clinching 26 for the back nine.
He had two net eagles (4pt holes) at the 12th and the 14th.
From a field 51 boys who had qualified from regional finals, Niven won by five clear points from Gavin Petrie (Forfar), who plays off 10, and Greig Govenlock, a 17-handicapper at the Glen, North Berwick.
Petrie won the second prize with a better second-nine points score of 23 to Govenlock's 20pt.
Charlotte Munro plays off 20 at Gullane. She top scored with 37pt at the head of the field of 30 girl qualifiers.
Charlotte had 16pts for the first nine holes and 21 for the second. She had a gross score of 90.
Shannon McWilliam, an 11-year-old, 19-handicapper from Aboyne, Rachel Walker, who plays off five at Crichton Golf Club, near Dumfries, and Heather Neilson (Mouse Valley, Lanark) were all next best on the 36pt mark.
In a countback, Heather's second-nine points total of 18 placed her fourth.
The tie-breaker between Shannon and Rachel went down to the last six holes before Shannon was placed second with 15pt to Rachael's 12.
