Hannah, Kirsty help Radford
score first win
score first win
The British students who played in the Winthrop University Women's Intercollegiate tournament at the weekend must have all gone back to their colleges feeling happy and proud of their achievements.
Hannah Coles, pictured right, from Birmingham and Paisley-born Kirsty Condon from Blankney, Lincolnshire, played a major part in helping Radford University record their first tournament victory at the South Carolina venue after finishing second in a field of 24 teams at Waynesville.
Maxstoke Park GC member Hannah, a senior-year student, had rounds of 76 and 75 for 151 to tie for third place while freshman Kirsty had a pair of 77s for 154 which earned her joint sixth place in the rankings.Sammy Vass from Tain, Ross-shire shared the first-round lead with a 73 - her lowest ever competitive score in America. She went on to have a second-round 82 for 155 and 10th place, which is her highest ever finish on the US college circuit.
Welsh girl international Rachel Lewis (University of South Carolina Upstate) is still finding her feet, having only enrolled in August, so to make the top 20 - joint 17th to be precise - with rounds of 81 and 76, in a field of 49 players was another step up the ladder.
Radford University - nicknamed "The Highlanders" (Sammy should have been playing for them because she is a genuine Highlander) - shot 610 (301-309) to win the team title by five shots from by Wofford College.
Anne Marie Covar (Wofford) was the individual winner with scores of 74 and 69 for 143, finished seven shots ahead of Radford's Jade Okamoto (73-77).
Head Coach of the Highlanders, Jeff Beeler, said "Today's victory is a tremendous accomplishment. I'm extremely proud of the girls and their attitude heading into the final round which was played in tough conditions."
Sammy Vass led Gardner-Webb University into third place on 622. A transfer from a very big university, Central Florida, to a smaller one over the summer has worked wonders for the Scot's confidence and her golf.
Harriet Owers-Bradley from Nottingham, a student at Yale University, fnished joint 28th in a field of 96 players at the Nittany Lions Women's Invitational at Penn State's Blue Course (par 72, 6246yd).
Harrier scored 80, 78 and 74 for 232 - 14 shots behind the winner, Fabla Rothenfluh (Rollins) who won by one stroke with consistent scores of 73, 73 and 72 for 218.
Nick Flynn from Surrey, a freshman student at Western Texas Univeresity, finished fourth in a field of 36 players at the Andrews College Invite tournament at Andrews Country Club, Andrews in Texas.
Nick had two rounds of 69 for a total of 138 over a par-71 course of 6,326yd.
He finished a shot behind three players who tied for first place on 138 - Jeff Hageman (McLennan) (66-71), Mac Walrath (Odessa) (66-71) and Stanton Tondre (Odessa) (70-67).
Scot Jordan McColl from Dundee, a student at New Mexico Junior College tied for 14th place in the same event with scores of 70 and 73.
