Viva Murrayfield Ladies! Winners of Mail on Sunday Classic
Murrayfield Ladies have won the Mail on Sunday Classic!
Murrayfield beat Beau Desert (Staffordshire) 3 1/2-1 1/2 in the final - the 11th round of the national inter-club competition - at El Rompido, Huelva on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Scotland's other qualifiers for the last four - Skelmorlie Ladies from North Ayrshire - lost narrowly in the other semi-final. They were beaten 3-2 by Beau Desert.
Well done, Murrayfield! And well done Skelmorlie to reach the last four from such a huge, national entry.
Norma Richmond reports:
The Murrayfield team arrived at El Rompido Golf and Country Resort on Sunday 21st November. A practice round on the North Course in the afternoon had been arranged for the teams to familiarise themselves with the course. The names for the semi-final matches for the ladies and the men were drawn out of a hat after dinner on the first evening.
The Ladies Semi-final matches were between:
Murrayfield and Wildwood GC from Surrey
Skelmorlie and Beau Desert from Staffordshire.
Much was made of the fact that two Scottish teams had reached the semi-final stages – something which has not happened in the many years this competition has been held.
Murrayfield’s team on semi-final day was Margaret Fergusson, Rosie Dennis, Lynn Wilson, Norma Richmond and Caroline Johnstone. They woke to heavy skies and even heavier rain and, although they had taken the decision not to have caddies, they were slightly envious of their opponents whose caddies managed to keep player and clubs dry.
However, in spite of the rain, Murrayfield came out on top – 5-0. They were Singing in the Rain with that result
Beau Desert, who had been coached by Alison Nicholas, beat Skelmorlie 3-2 in a close semi-final.
So, Murrayfield met Beau Desert in the final. The organisers had been concerned that the course might become unplayable overnight but the green-staff worked hard to keep the course open. The final matches went out in slightly better weather, but definitely not blue skies and sunshine! Murrayfield’s team in the finals was Margaret Fergusson, Ray Lynch, Lynn Wilson, Norma Richmond and Caroline Johnstone.
The first two matches went Murrayfield’s way with Margaret winning, in style, 5 and 4; Lynn won her match 2 and 1. Norma lost her match 4 and 3 which put some pressure on Ray and Caroline. Ray dug deep and halved her match on the 18th, having fought back from two down on the 17th tee. Caroline’s win of 4 and 2 gave us a winning score of 3½ - 1½. Fantastic!
The Murrayfield team is absolutely thrilled to become 2010 Champions and they spent the rest of the day celebrating. The Vale of Glamorgan men’s team, who won their final, very generously presented the girls with a bottle of champagne – which went down very well! The presentation of trophies followed the gala dinner – then the evening really got under way and we partied into the wee small hours.
We are so grateful for the many good wishes we all received both before our trip to Spain and during our time there. We are very grateful to the Mail on Sunday for their superb organisation which makes this such a terrific competition - we are so happy to have brought this trophy back to Murrayfield.
